Why Creating Free Video Work (Spec Ads) Actually Makes You Money

Updated: Sep 26

In the world of creative services, getting your foot in the door can often feel like an uphill battle. But what if I told you that creating free video work—commonly known as “spec ads”—could be the key to unlocking opportunities and showcasing your talent? At 2GETHER Creative, we’ve seen firsthand how spec ads can turn a passion project into a full-blown career launchpad. Here’s why embracing spec ads might be the best move you can make for your creative journey.

What Are Spec Ads?

Spec ads, short for “speculative advertisements,” are promotional videos or advertisements created without a paid commission. Essentially, videos no one asked for. They’re sample pieces designed to demonstrate your creative vision and technical skills. While they’re not commissioned work, they serve as a powerful portfolio tool to attract potential clients and showcase your abilities.

The 2GETHER Creative Journey: A Spec Ad Success Story

Our story at 2GETHER Creative began with a

bold challenge. A group of videographers,

myself included, connected online and decided to challenge ourselves with a mission: “3 Spec Ads in 24 Hours.” The goal was to create three distinct spec ads in just one day, pushing our creative limits and exploring new ideas.

Our spec ads included a motivational piece for New Balance, a 30 second piece for a pickleball company, and a spontaneous creation for a randomly picked Apple Juice brand from Target. For the apple juice ad, we took spontaneity to a new level. Blindfolded, JD—one of our talented team members—navigated through the aisles of Target and grabbed the first product he touched. This unexpected approach resulted in a uniquely engaging ad that highlighted our creative flexibility.

The Impact of Spec Ads

The results of our spec ad challenge were nothing short of remarkable. After creating the New Balance ad, we were thrilled to be contacted by New Balance themselves. What started as a creative experiment led to us being hired to cover their prestigious events, including the New Balance Grand Prix, New Balance Nationals Indoor, and New Balance Nationals Outdoors. It was a testament to how powerful and effective spec ads can be.

Here’s why spec ads are such a valuable tool:

  1. Showcase Your Creativity

Spec ads allow you to experiment with new concepts and showcase your creativity without the constraints of client briefs or specific requirements. They provide a platform to let your imagination run wild and produce work that truly represents your style and vision.

  2. Build Your Portfolio

If you’re just starting out or looking to expand your portfolio, spec ads offer a way to demonstrate your skills in a real-world context. They can serve as high-quality examples of your work that potential clients can see and appreciate.

  3. Attract Potential Clients

A well-crafted spec ad can catch the eye of potential clients or brands, as it did for us with New Balance. Your work might be exactly what a brand is looking for, and spec ads provide a way for you to be discovered.

  4. Enhance Your Skill Set

The process of creating spec ads can be a valuable learning experience. It challenges you to work under time constraints, tackle different styles, and solve creative problems—all of which can sharpen your skills and broaden your expertise.

  5. Foster Collaboration

Spec ad projects often involve collaboration with other creatives, which can lead to new connections and opportunities. Working together on spec ads can help build relationships with like-minded individuals and potential future collaborators.

Embrace the Challenge

Creating spec ads isn’t just about producing content for the sake of it; it’s about pushing boundaries, exploring new creative avenues, and seizing opportunities. At 2GETHER Creative, our spec ad challenge was a turning point that proved how taking risks and showcasing your talent can lead to incredible results.

So, whether you’re an aspiring videographer, a seasoned creative, or someone looking to break into the industry, consider taking on a spec ad project. You never know who might see your work and how it could impact your career. Even if you don’t think the spec piece is your best work, post it anyway! We can not stress this enough. Dive in, embrace the challenge, and let your creativity shine. Your next big opportunity might just be one spec ad away!
